Lobo (Feral – Adopted)

Standing in the pouring rain
All alone in a world that’s changed
Running scared, now forced to hide
But he’ll find his way by the morning light.
From “Will the Wolf Survive?” by Los Lobos

Lobo is another feral who came our way in the summer of 2020.  At the time, we had Chloe and Stella and numerous foster litters. It took my husband Bob over two months to get close enough to Lobo to actually touch him; and, as of October 9, we were still considering whether we wanted to live trap him or not. We needed to make a decision before it got too cold or before we found out Lobo is actually a she and pregnant.

On October 23, Bob actually brushed Lobo, which led to a full pet down Lobo’s back while he was eating. There wasn’t really any affection shown. Lobo ate, groomed for a few minutes, and then left, but showed up every evening very hungry.

As of November 10, we still had not caught Lobo. Bob caught him in a small cage a few weeks before, but Lobo pushed open the gate and escaped. He  was much more wary of traps and cages after that. The weather kept getting colder; Stella and Chloe had yet to be adopted; we were planning a trip to Minnesota in two weeks, and the last of this season’s litters left for their new homes. We were trying to figure out how to do the right thing by Lobo.

December 3, 2020, we caught Lobo in a borrowed drop trap. December 4, he was neutered and vaccinated. Then the fun began. Lobo progressed much more quickly than anyone could have imagined. He bit and scratched Bob pretty hard early on, but came to love being touched.

Lobo was adopted on January 4, 2021, and left to be with his new family on January 7. Lobo and his new fur brother George are bonded and well. Thank you to all of the “Lobo Locos” who continue follow Lobo’s journey.
